Virtual Poolside Chat with Stanford alum Dr. Russell Jeung: How Stop AAPI Hate Raised Visibility with Data

SAPAAC presents StopAAPIHate, a program for the entire Stanford Alumni community during Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

Join us for a conversation about hate crimes and the current state of Asian Americans with Dr. Russell Jeung, Stanford alumni and AAPI hero.

Dr. Russell Leung (Stanford ’84) received a BA in Human Biology and a MA in Education from Stanford University. After working in China and in the Mayor’s Office of San Francisco, he obtained his PhD in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley in 2000 and began teaching at Foothill College and later, San Francisco State University’s Asian American Studies Department in 2002 where he continues today.  In 2020, Dr. Jeung launched Stop AAPI Hate, to track Covid-19 related discrimination.  Now a household term, StopAAPIHate is a rallying cry that is the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

The discussion will include:

  • What is StopAAPIHate?
  • Allyship on a personal and societal level
  • AAPI visibility in the digital age (technology’s role in stopping hate crimes and spreading the word)
  • Dr. Leung’s AAPI Heritage Month message
  • Q&A
