Senator Harris (D-CA) Makes History as the First Minority Vice Presidential candidate of a major political party in the U.S.

[Atlanta, GA. 8/12/20] – The leaders of the National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAAP) celebrate the news of Senator Kamala Devi Harris (D-CA) being selected as the running mate for presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.  This historic selection of Harris makes her the first Black woman and first person of South Asian heritage to be a major political party’s vice presidential candidate in the United States.  NAAAP is a national nonprofit whose mission is to build Asian American leaders and to promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace and community.

“As a non-partisan professional and leadership organization, NAAAP has been advocating for more leadership opportunities and advancement of Asian Americans and minorities, across all sectors of our community.  This is a historic moment for minorities and for Asian Americans,” said Betty Lo, NAAAP Interim National President.

“Leaders who look like America provide Asian American and Pacific Islander and multicultural people with plausible role models for advancement to the most influential posts,” remarked Cyndy Yu-Robinson, Executive Director of NAAAP.

NAAAP remains non-partisan and focuses on expanding Asian American and Pacific Islander representation in leadership.  The organization has and will continue to partner with national and local civic organizations to support voter registration and to increase civic engagement.
