C100
This will be the fifteenth C100 Asian American Career Ceilings Initiative event that will feature a unique combination of a panel followed by discussion tables on the topic of “Asian American Career Ceilings: What Can We Do Better” This virtual event will be on Saturday, July 17, 2021, 1 p.m. EDT
This series of events that has been convened by the Committee of 100 has examined the challenges facing Chinese Americans and other Asian Americans with regard to barriers to advancement in a wide variety of professions in the U.S. The goal of this initiative has been to educate and to facilitate progress, contributing to the already significant efforts of organizations and individuals who have been tackling this issue.
Peter Young, Chair of the Initiative, CEO of Young & Partners and a C100 Member, will be the host of the event and the panel moderator. Panelists:
Gary Locke (Chairman of C100 and former Secretary of Commerce, Governor of Washington State, and Ambassador to China),
Jennifer Lee (Julian Clarence Levi Professor of Social Sciences at Columbia University and author of “The Asian American Achievement Paradox”),
Anna Mok (Deloitte Partner and President of Ascend), Michael Morrison (Columbia Business School Professor and Asian American Career Ceilings researcher), and
Maeley Tom (Former Chief Administrative Office of the California State Assembly).
The panelists will cover different avenues that can advance constructive change – government, political action, business leadership, academia, and individual and societal behaviors and practices. Peter Young will moderate the panel.
Dialogue Discussion Tables
The second part of the event will be patterned after the C100 CEO and Leaders Forum that was held in 2019 where the attendees are divided into tables of 8, with a Discussion Leader guiding each table. Each table will brainstorm and share ideas about how we can do a better job of overcoming the Career Ceiling Challenges facing Asian Americans.
At the end, the Discussion Leaders will gather on the stage and summarize the two or three best ideas that his or her table produced. These ideas will be written up and distributed to all of the attendees after the event. Our hope is that this will create new ideas and initiatives, facilitate the formation of new relationships among the attendees, and galvanize action focused on the new ideas.
The New York Lodge of FF Fraternity, the oldest Chinese American fraternal organization, has graciously supplied planning help and a number of discussion leaders.
